Expert Resources for Care at Home

Compassus CEO Mike Asselta On the Future of Healthcare | Maxwell TEC

Written by Maxwell TEC | May 04, 2026

Maxwell TEC is a proud sponsor of Last Visit First with Tom Maxwell, a podcast bringing leaders, innovators, and caregivers together to talk honestly about the choices shaping the future of home health and hospice.

Some leaders talk about culture. Mike Asselta has spent two years proving it can survive at scale.

Mike is the CEO of Compassus, one of the nation's largest integrated home-based care companies, with 10,000 caregivers and $1.5 billion in revenue spanning home health, hospice, palliative care, infusion and private duty services. He joined in May of 2024, the latest chapter in a 31-year healthcare career that included stops as President of Fresenius Kidney Care and COO of Fresenius U.S. Services. He has also retired three times. It has not worked out once.

In this conversation with host Tom Maxwell, Mike covers the full scope of what he is building and why it matters. He talks about entering one of the most fragmented industries in healthcare, where no integrated provider has ever commanded more than 3% market share, and why that fragmentation is both the biggest threat and the biggest opportunity for a company willing to scale with purpose.

He breaks down the case for hospital-health system JV partnerships, the clinical insights driving Compassus's palliative care growth, the workforce crisis quietly straining the industry, and the AI transformation already happening inside the company that is giving nurses their evenings back and cutting intake from four hours to 15 minutes.
